Pre-Production-Pizza

Been working on my latest short film quite a bit recently. After finishing the script I held two auditions, met a production designer, got access to a pizza shop, and now I’m studying cinematography and storyboarding.

Roger Deakins 1

Roger Deakins is a genius. I watched Revolutionary Road again last night (in 720p Blu-ray). It has some of the most amazing cinematography I’ve ever seen. I’m starting to realize why certain things are objective versus subjective, close-up versus medium. Amazing stuff.

Anyway, storyboarding is going well. We’re going to shoot the entire pizza location (minus one shot) this Thursday evening. Last night, Peter and I took some time to stage and light the place so we’d have a good understanding of what we’re going to need to do.

Even though I’ve admired Deakins since Fargo, some of the veteran cinematographers may consider his methods a little below master class standards. He relies on diffusion, a “workaround” that sidesteps precision shadow placement and direction of light. Mendes’ other film, Road to Perdition, has absolutely perfect shadow placement and key lighting. But that was by Conrad Hall, an old master. In cinematographer years, Deakins is still a young man.

For extreme subjective and objective, as well as his trademark diffusion, No Country for Old Men is a fine sample to rewatch.

Revolutionary Road was a fine example of top notch acting, though hearing Leonardo DiCaprio shout “April!” 200 times became grating…lol End of empty comment.

can’t wait.
also, loved revolutionary road, I’ll have to watch again now that you’ve brought up one of the reason’s I probably liked it so much without knowing.

Wow, despite being just tests, that short is looking amazing!

Hope to finish it this month! :)
