In writing Rory’s First Kiss, I’ve sought out numerous people to ask what their first kisses were like. Guys tended to give me descriptions that were very straightforward, focusing more on what the actual kiss was like (using words like “unbelievable”, “amazing”, and “wet”). Females, as one might expect, did a much better job.
Now, I’m completely generalizing here. There were a few good ones from guys and some not-so-interesting ones from girls, but it just got me thinking. I’m writing RFK from the perspective of a female. I gotta make sure to be very descriptive. The psychology goes that males “see” it and females “feel” it. Girls are emotional beings. They need foreplay to get off.
And so, I’ve written and rewritten most of the pilot episode of Rory’s First Kiss multiple times. It starts out with Rory arriving at her just-passed-away grandmother’s house, which is now hers. After moving around for most of her life, this is a huge change of pace, a new chapter so to speak. To exclaim the point, she opens up her new diary and titles the first page, “Chapter 2″.
The rest of the pilot will focus on getting everyone up to speed with the backstory and be less dramatic. And instead of using the oh-so-convenient-main-character-is-a-video-blogger approach, like many web series do, each episode will start at the end. Rory will be writing in her diary and the day’s events will be recreated from her memory. She will never break the third wall.
Rory’s actual first kiss, which “didn’t count”, was based on personal experience. Technically speaking, my first kiss with a girl other than family was in kindergarten, during the stage where you’re too young to realize that girls have cooties. Her name was Crystal and we would swing together during recess and make Playdoh animals whenever Mrs. Harshbarger called free play time. It was the very last day of school, the walls bare of artwork. Our last recess. We sat alone in the big cement tube on the playground. She leaned over, kissed my cheek, and whispered, “I love you.” She moved away that summer.
My first “real” kiss was during a game of truth or dare at my friend’s birthday party. I was 16, it was late, all of the unimportant people had already left. The scary movie marathon had just ended and we were all sitting around, tired and doing nothing. Me, being ridiculously shy at that age, wanted no part when they decided to play a game. The penalty for losing (as well as not playing) was to go into the kitchen and make sex noises. I somehow worked up the nerve and actually felt a little better after I pretended to moan, chewing on my plastic cup to hide my blushing face. Wanting to see me squirm, a guy named “Pockets” dared a girl named “Star” to kiss me. Playing along, she took me into the other room and that was my first kiss.

I like the diary idea. The video-blogger thingy stopped being cool with LoneGirl15. And we all know how long ago that was.
PS: I like the simplistic new look of the blog.

It has been used well occasionally, like on The Guild. But yeah, I think lots of people are tired of it. I like the Clark and Michael approach better.

Never heard of Clark and Michael. I just saw the pilot and it looks good. Very well shot, like The Office. Reminds me of your Arrested Office skit :)

Ah, I like the idea of Rory moving into her dead grandmother’s house. You can really play around with mise-en-scene (a picture frame, a childhood toy, etc…). Anyway, I don’t wanna feed you too many ideas. You do realize that we’re locked in fierce competition, right? I’m going to do whatever it takes to ensure that my romantic short wins and that Rory’s First Kiss flops. Hahahahahaha–Oh yeah, let me borrow the Canon 5D2 when you’re done shooting. I sort of need it to make my short.

So you’re both shooting with a DSLR? Whatever happened to the more-important-than-Peter Camera? :p

Heh, well I want a nice wide angle and shallow depth of field for RFK. Our EX1 is bulky, not wide angle, and you can’t get very shallow dof.
Hey, what if we sell our EX1 and buy 2 5d’s? What do you think, Peter?

Ok, first off, your technical first kiss (the kindergarten one) was sooooooooo cute!!! Screw the kiss on the lips you got during some stupid truth & dare game… to me, THAT doesn’t count because the person was “dared” to do it. Your little elementary school sweetheart was LEGIT because she WANTED to kiss you.
There’s some girl psychology right there! ;)
